How we compared

We compared six alternatives to Candy AI on the nine dimensions of our companions desk: customization, memory, photos and voice and calls, content rules, credits and tokens, privacy and training, age verification, cancellation and refunds, and user reports. We also compared starting price, free tier and platforms. The table above shows every fact side by side, last checked on 24 October 2026.

Every fact comes from the apps’ own pricing pages, terms, privacy policies and help articles, and from App Store listings. Review site figures and prices that appear only behind a login come from third-party sources and are marked. Where an app does not publish a fact, we say so.

For this report we weighed the dimensions by the reasons people give for leaving Candy AI. Memory and media come first, because they decide whether a companion feels like the same person after weeks of chat. The real cost comes next, because Candy AI’s low plan price hides a small token grant. Written content rules, privacy and refund terms follow.

Why do people look for a Candy AI alternative?

Candy AI has a low published yearly price, $3.99 a month billed yearly, or $47.88 a year. In our companion comparison, only DreamGF’s first year costs less, at $44.28, and it renews at $88.56. It also has a detailed character builder. Four limits push users to look elsewhere.

A small token grant. Chat is unlimited, but images, video, voice messages, calls and custom companions all spend tokens. Premium includes 100 tokens a month, and Premium Plus 330. A third-party source puts an image at about 4 tokens.

Training use of chats. The privacy notice says chats may be de-identified and used to train AI models. Account data is kept for up to 3 years after the last activity.

A narrow refund rule. Refunds apply only within 24 hours, for card payments, and only if 20 tokens or fewer were used. Users in the EU and UK have a 14-day right of withdrawal.

Web only and a self-declared age check. There is no native app, and the age check is a self-declaration at entry. The monthly plan also costs $9.99 for the first month and then $13.99.

Kindroid: why is it our pick?

Kindroid is our pick because it is the strongest on the two dimensions that matter most for a long-term companion, memory and media, and it puts its adult rules in writing.

What it does well. Memory is the most documented of any app we compared: backstory, key memories, long-term memory, journals of up to 500 entries and cascaded memory for subscribers. Its companions send photo and video selfies and voice messages, and you can make live voice and video calls. The moderation guidelines allow NSFW and erotic roleplay and ban CSAM, harm and non-consensual images of real people. Chat is unlimited. It runs on web, iOS and Android and has an API. Payment on file counts as age verification, and flagged free users verify with a Yoti selfie or a government ID.

Where it falls short. It costs more than Candy AI. The 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts to a paid plan. Refunds are case-by-case, and the docs say sales are generally final. Selfie and audio credits cost extra above the monthly grant, and the Ultra and MAX tiers are add-ons. Training use of chats is not published. On Trustpilot, Kindroid has 2.6 out of 5 from 20 reviews, a third-party figure.

Price. $15.99 a month on the App Store, $42.99 for 3 months or $159.99 a year. The web price is usually lower.

Who it suits. Users who want a companion that remembers them and talks by voice and video.

Nomi: the lower-cost pick

Nomi has memory close to Kindroid’s at a lower price. Our Kindroid vs Nomi report compares the two in detail.

What it does well. Memory works on short, medium and long-term levels, with a Mind Map view of what the companion has learned. Companions send selfies, image art, AI video and voice messages, and you can make hands-free voice calls. Free chat needs no card. Native iOS and Android apps and an API are available.

Where it falls short. Its adult rules are written only in the App Store listing, which lists sexual content with in-app controls. The privacy policy refers to training archives. Payments are not refundable except at Nomi’s discretion. Videos and requests above the daily limits cost Nomi Credits, from 40 credits for $4.99.

Price. The Launch Plan costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year on the App Store. Standard costs $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year.

Who it suits. Users who want strong memory and a free start at a lower yearly cost.

ourdream.ai: the pick for images and video

ourdream.ai puts chat, images, video and voice calls in one plan, and it publishes its coin prices.

What it does well. OurDream’s homepage FAQ says both plans include 1,000 dreamcoins each month. Its help center says subscribers receive 1,000 dreamcoins on their billing anniversary and that dreamcoins do not refresh monthly. Ask support how this applies to the yearly plan before you budget around it. The help center lists the cost of each action: 50 coins a minute for voice calls, 10 coins for 2 images and 100 coins per 5 seconds of video. Its prohibited-content policy is detailed and public. It uses a third-party ID or face check through Go.cam or AgeVerif where the law requires it, for example in the UK and Australia.

Where it falls short. Media drains coins fast: a 1,000-coin grant covers about 20 minutes of calls or 50 seconds of video. Memory is not documented beyond a homepage claim. The privacy page says user data may train AI models. There is no refund once more than 25% of a plan is used, and free users pay 1 coin per chat message. It is web only.

Price. $9.99 a month billed yearly ($119.88), or $19.99 a month.

Who it suits. Users who want images and video of their companion more than long memory.

Joi AI: the largest character library

Joi AI has a large library of creator-made characters and a third-party age check.

What it does well. Users can create characters with a set look, personality and behavior, or chat with licensed creator characters. Photos and videos come in chat, and the app also generates images and video. Age is checked through VerifyMyAge by email check, facial age estimation or government ID, depending on region. On Trustpilot, Joi AI has 3.9 out of 5 from 263 reviews, a third-party figure.

Where it falls short. Explicit messages cost extra: 4 Neurons each, with photos up to 120 Neurons and videos up to 1,900. Plan prices are not published. Voice features are not documented. The terms say chats may be disclosed in a chargeback dispute. Refunds within 14 days apply only to fraud or a one-time error.

Price. Not published. Premium is billed monthly to yearly, and Neurons are sold separately.

Who it suits. Users who want creator-made characters and accept pay-per-message costs.

Secrets AI: clear data rules

Secrets AI has the clearest data-deletion rules of the six and the highest third-party user rating.

What it does well. Chats are deleted when you delete your account, and call audio is deleted after transcription. The terms allow explicit adult content and ban minors, non-consent, extreme violence, revenge porn and impersonation. It makes AI images, videos and reels and supports audio calls. On Trustpilot, it has 4.5 out of 5 from 282 reviews, a third-party figure.

Where it falls short. The privacy policy says chats may train AI models. The age check is a self-attestation, and the service excludes regions that require verification. Official prices are behind a login. Payments and Moments purchases are final, apart from a 14-day right on the first purchase in the EU and UK. It is web only.

Price. $109.99 a year (about $9.17 a month) billed yearly, and Premium at $19.99 a month, according to third-party sources.

Who it suits. Users who value clear deletion rules and story-led videos.

DreamGF: a cheap first month

DreamGF has a low first-month price and a published token list, but the price rises sharply on renewal.

What it does well. The builder mixes face, body and clothing options. Companions send real-time photos, voice messages and short videos, and you can make voice calls. The token list is public: 100 tokens a month, with an image at 10 tokens, a voice message at 3 and a voice call at 7 a minute. A free account gets a daily bonus of 10 to 50 messages.

Where it falls short. The monthly plan costs $12.99 for the first month and then $25.98, about double. There are no refunds after any use, a promotion can lock cancellation for 30 days, and a $1.99 monthly maintenance charge may apply. Memory is not documented. The age check is a self-confirmation, and UK access is blocked until verification is available.

Price. $12.99 for the first month, then $25.98 a month. The yearly plan costs $44.28 for the first year, then $88.56, and the 3-month plan also rises after the first period.

Who it suits. Users who want a low first payment and will check the renewal date.

How do the alternatives compare with Candy AI?

Each alternative beats Candy AI on some dimensions, and only DreamGF beats its yearly price, for the first year only.

• Customization. Candy AI’s builder is one of the most detailed. Kindroid adds voice and backstory, and DreamGF mixes face, body and clothing.
• Memory. Kindroid and Nomi document their memory systems. Candy AI lists 20 memory slots on Premium Plus. ourdream.ai, Joi AI and DreamGF do not document limits.
• Photos, voice and calls. Kindroid is the only app here with live video calls. Nomi, ourdream.ai, Secrets AI and DreamGF have voice calls.
• Content rules. Kindroid, ourdream.ai, Joi AI, Secrets AI and DreamGF publish written content rules. Nomi’s adult rules sit only in its App Store listing.

• Age verification. Kindroid, ourdream.ai and Joi AI use real checks in some or all cases. Secrets AI and DreamGF rely on self-confirmation, like Candy AI.
• Cancellation and refunds. All seven apps limit refunds. Candy AI has the shortest written refund window, 24 hours. DreamGF refunds nothing after any use, Secrets AI’s payments are final apart from a 14-day EU and UK right, and Nomi refunds only at its discretion.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Kindroid if you want the best companion and can pay more than Candy AI. It has the most documented memory, live voice and video calls, written NSFW rules and apps on every platform, from $15.99 a month on the App Store or $159.99 a year.

Choose Nomi if price matters most after Candy AI: free chat with no card and $59.99 a year on the Launch yearly plan, with memory close to Kindroid’s. Choose ourdream.ai if images and video matter more than memory. Choose Joi AI for creator-made characters, and Secrets AI for clear deletion rules. DreamGF suits users who want a cheap first month and will cancel or budget for the higher renewal price.
