How we compared
We compared six alternatives to JanitorAI on the seven dimensions of our text desk: models and context, characters and tools, content rules, message limits, privacy and training, age verification, and user reports. We also compared starting price, free tier and platforms. The table above shows every fact side by side, last checked on 24 October 2026.
Every fact comes from the services’ own pricing pages, terms, privacy policies and help articles. Review site figures come from third-party sources and are marked as such. Where a service does not publish a fact, we say so. We did not count anything a service only implies.
For this report we weighed the dimensions by the reasons people give for leaving JanitorAI. Context length and message limits come first, because a short free memory is the most common complaint. Privacy comes next, because JanitorAI’s privacy policy does not say whether chats train models. Content rules and character tools follow. Price matters, but every tool here has some free path, so it decides less than it would elsewhere.
JanitorAI itself stays the overall pick of our full text desk comparison, because it is free with no published message cap and has a large catalog. This report is for readers who want something different. Our full process is on the methodology page.
Why do people look for a Janitor AI alternative?
JanitorAI is free and has a large catalog of user-made characters, but four limits push users to look elsewhere.
Short free memory. The free JLLM model has about 8k to 9K tokens of context. In a long roleplay, the bot loses earlier details. janitor+ gives five times more context, at $12.99 a month or $99 a year.
Moderation and support. On Trustpilot, JanitorAI has 2.5 out of 5 from 35 reviews, and the complaints are mostly about bans, support and output quality. These figures are third-party.
Privacy. The privacy policy does not say whether chats are used to train models. It says only that data is kept as long as necessary.
Mobile and age checks. NSFW is off by default in the mobile app. Users in Australia, Brazil and the UK must pass a k-ID age check with a face estimate, an ID photo or a reused check.
Each alternative below fixes one or more of these limits. None fixes all of them at no cost.
Some readers come to JanitorAI from Character.AI, whose Community Guidelines ban pornographic content and nudity. If that is you, our Character.AI alternatives report compares seven chat and roleplay sites that allow adult content, with JanitorAI as the pick.
SillyTavern: why is it our pick?
SillyTavern is our pick because it fixes the most JanitorAI limits at once. It is free, it has no message limits of its own, and with a local model nothing leaves your computer.
What it does well. SillyTavern is an open-source front-end under the AGPL-3.0 license. It runs character cards and adds World Info lorebooks, group chats, personas, Data Bank RAG, a scripting engine and extensions. It connects to OpenAI-compatible APIs, KoboldAI, Tabby, AI Horde and local backends. If you already use an outside model through a JanitorAI proxy, you can point SillyTavern at a similar provider. The docs say it does not track user data.
Where it falls short. You must install it with Node.js, and it has no model of its own. Local models need a capable GPU. Context, speed and content limits all come from the backend you choose, and the docs note that hosted models are often censored. There is no official support channel and no age verification, because it is software you run yourself.
Price. The software is free. Model costs depend on the backend, and local models cost nothing apart from hardware and power.
Who it suits. JanitorAI users who already use proxies, or anyone who wants full control and full privacy and can do a one-time setup.
NovelAI: the pick for private stories
NovelAI is the strongest choice if you care most about privacy and long stories, and less about a public character catalog.
What it does well. Stories, lorebooks and scripts are encrypted end to end with a key made from your password, and prompts are not kept. The terms list no content-type bans and say user content is wholly the user’s own. GLM-4.6 and Xialong run with 28,672 tokens of context on the site, about three times JanitorAI’s free context. Every paid tier gives unlimited text generation.
Where it falls short. There is no free tier beyond the Paper trial of 50 text generations. There is no public character catalog, because NovelAI is built as a story editor with a text adventure mode, not a chat site. If you lose your password, you lose your stories. The terms require users to be 18 or older, but no check is published.
Price. Tablet costs $10 a month, Scroll $15 and Opus $25. Opus has the largest context for some models.
Who it suits. Writers who want private, long-form stories and are happy to pay.
SpicyChat: the closest hosted match
SpicyChat works the most like JanitorAI: a hosted site with a free tier and a catalog of user-made bots. Our JanitorAI vs SpicyChat report covers the two in detail.
What it does well. Tools include lorebooks, rulebooks with meters, group chat, director mode and personas. It publishes a model and context table, with models such as DeepSeek, Kimi and Qwen. Paid tiers get unlimited messages and skip waiting lines. It has an Android app.
Where it falls short. Context is smaller than JanitorAI’s on the low tiers: 4,096 tokens free, 8K on True Supporter and 32K only on I’m All In. The free message cap is not published. The rules require explicit bots to carry an NSFW label and ban minors, non-consent, incest, step-family themes and real people. The privacy policy does not say whether chats train models. Users in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states must pass a third-party video selfie or ID check. There is no iOS App Store app.
Price. Get A Taste costs $5.95 a month, True Supporter $19.95 and I’m All In $29.95. Prices rose on 8 September 2026.
Who it suits. Users who want a JanitorAI-style site with more structured tools and accept stricter theme bans.
Chub AI: the fewest content limits
Chub AI sets the fewest content limits of the hosted sites here and runs its own models with long context.
What it does well. Chub says it does not meaningfully restrict characters or interactions. It bans illegal content and sexualized minors. The subscription includes all in-house models, including Soji 1.6T with 60K context. It hosts public character cards and lorebooks with keyword triggers and works with OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter and local models. Private chats are not used for training or shared unencrypted.
Where it falls short. The subscription is paid in crypto only. The free option is a one-time set of trial credits for a few dozen messages, unless you bring your own API key or local model. Concurrent requests return an error. No age check method is published, and third-party sources report that Chub is blocked in Australia.
Price. $20 a month, paid in crypto.
Who it suits. Users who want few rules and a long-context in-house model, and can pay in crypto.
AI Dungeon: the longest context
AI Dungeon is a text adventure tool rather than a character chat site, but it publishes the largest context in this group.
What it does well. Free story models are listed as unlimited. Paid tiers raise context to 8k, 16k, 32k or 64K tokens, with DeepSeek and Ultra models. It has hundreds of community scenarios, Story Cards and Plot Components. The Mature setting does not limit sexual or violent output, a filter blocks sexual content involving minors, and unpublished content is not moderated. It has iOS and Windows apps.
Where it falls short. Free context is only 2k to 4K tokens, smaller than JanitorAI’s. The age check is a self-confirmation when you turn on the Mature setting. Stories are encrypted, but the keys are held on the server, and third-party sources report that the Improve the AI training setting is on by default for new users.
Price. Journey costs $14.99 a month, Legend $29.99, Mythic $49.99 and Ultimate $99.99.
Who it suits. Fans of interactive fiction who want long context on a paid tier.
CrushOn.AI: the lowest entry price
CrushOn.AI has the lowest paid entry price here, but it is the weakest alternative on privacy.
What it does well. Free models do not use credits, and limits are published for every tier. Memory is 8K on the free tier, 16K on Standard to Luxe and 24K on Elite and Imperial. Tools include pinned memory, auto summary and group chat on paid tiers.
Where it falls short. The privacy policy says chat content is used to train models, in a general way not linked to users. Free chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. Free users get 100 credits a month on shared capacity that may be slow at peak times. Unlimited Pro models need a separate $24.99 a month package. Third-party sources report a paid age check before the 18+ toggle in some regions.
Price. Standard costs $4.90 a month billed yearly, or $58.88 a year. Tiers go up to Imperial at $150 a month.
Who it suits. Budget users who accept a credit system and training use of their chats.
How do the alternatives compare with JanitorAI?
Set against JanitorAI’s free tier, each alternative wins on some dimensions and loses on others.
- Models and context. JanitorAI’s free model has about 9K tokens. AI Dungeon (64k), Chub (60K), SpicyChat (32K) and NovelAI (28,672) all list more, but only on paid tiers. On free tiers, SpicyChat (4,096) and AI Dungeon (2k to 4k) have less.
- Characters and tools. SpicyChat and Chub have public bot catalogs like JanitorAI’s. SillyTavern runs character cards you import. NovelAI and AI Dungeon are built around stories and scenarios.
- Content rules. Chub and NovelAI set the fewest limits, and SillyTavern sets none of its own. SpicyChat and CrushOn.AI ban more themes than JanitorAI does.
- Message limits. SillyTavern has none of its own. NovelAI is unlimited on every paid tier, and AI Dungeon lists free story models as unlimited. CrushOn.AI gives free users 100 credits a month.
- Privacy and training. SillyTavern with a local model, NovelAI with end-to-end encryption and Chub with no training on private chats all say more than JanitorAI’s policy. CrushOn.AI says chats train its models.
- Age verification. SpicyChat checks in the most regions. SillyTavern has no check. See our age verification brief for every service.
- User reports. No alternative has strong public ratings. These figures are third-party and the samples are small.
Which one should you choose?
Choose SillyTavern if you can install software. It is free, it has no message limits, it runs character cards with lorebooks and group chats, and with a local model your chats never leave your computer. It is the only alternative that fixes context, privacy and limits together, because you choose the model.
Choose SpicyChat if you want a hosted site that works like JanitorAI and accept its 4,096-token free context and stricter theme bans. Choose NovelAI if you write long stories and want them encrypted, from $10 a month. Choose Chub AI for the fewest content limits if you can pay $20 a month in crypto. Choose AI Dungeon for text adventures with up to 64K context on paid tiers. CrushOn.AI has the lowest paid entry price, at $4.90 a month billed yearly, but its chats are used for training.
If none of these fits, JanitorAI with janitor+ at $8.25 a month on yearly billing gives five times its free context and remains our overall pick for character roleplay.
Our pick
Free, open-source and fully private with your own models, but you must install it and bring a backend.
