How we compared
We compared seven adult chat, roleplay and story sites as alternatives to Character.AI, on the seven dimensions of our text desk: models and context, characters and tools, content rules, message limits, privacy and training, age verification, and user reports. We also compared starting price, free tier and platforms. The table above shows every fact side by side, last checked on 24 October 2026.
Every fact comes from the services’ own pricing pages, terms, privacy policies and help articles. For Character.AI, we read its Community Guidelines, its Terms of Service and its App Store listing on 24 October 2026. Review site figures come from third-party sources and are marked. Where a service does not publish a fact, we say so.
Character.AI is not in the comparison table, because it does not allow adult content and so does not meet the entry rule for our text desk. We describe its rules in the next section so you can see what changes when you switch.
For readers leaving Character.AI, we weighed the dimensions in this order: content rules first, because that is why you are switching; then the character catalog, because Character.AI is built around user-made characters; then context and message limits; then privacy and price. The seven tools are the same seven in our full text desk comparison. The full process is on our methodology page.
What does Character.AI allow?
Character.AI does not allow NSFW content. Its Community Guidelines describe the service as built for storytelling across genres, including romance, but they draw a firm line at adult content. In the guidelines’ words, “pornographic content, and nudity are prohibited.” Illegal sexual content, child exploitation, grooming and sexual extortion are also banned.
Filters apply to every chat. The guidelines say Character.AI’s systems filter content through automated moderation and human review, and that its models are built with filters and limits. Users under 18 talk to a separate model designed to reduce exposure to sensitive or suggestive content.
Getting around the filter breaks the rules. The guidelines prohibit attempts to manipulate the system or bypass its safety systems. When content breaks the guidelines or terms, Character.AI may remove it, issue warnings, suspend accounts or, in serious cases, ban users permanently. No published setting turns the filter off.
Age rules. The Terms of Service, last updated on 27 August 2025, bar users under 13, and users under 16 in the European Economic Area and the UK. The App Store listing shows an age rating of 18+ with in-app controls, and 4.3 out of 5 from 560,000 ratings. These App Store figures are third-party.
Price and refunds. Character.AI does not show the c.ai+ price on its public pages; the subscription page asks you to sign in. The terms say paid plans renew automatically until you cancel, and payments are not refundable except where the law requires. App Store and Google Play buyers must ask those stores for refunds.
So if you want adult roleplay, you need a different service. The seven below allow it, each with its own limits.
1. JanitorAI: why is it our pick?
JanitorAI is our pick because it is the closest match to Character.AI that allows adult roleplay. It is a free site with a large catalog of user-made characters, and sexual content is allowed on bots tagged Limitless.
What it does well. The catalog is large and user-made, with personas, tags and scripts. The free JLLM model has no published message cap. Users can also connect outside models through API proxies such as OpenRouter. It runs on web, iOS and Android. The content rules ban minors, gore, bestiality and sexual violence.
Where it falls short. Free context is about 8k to 9K tokens, so long chats lose earlier details. The privacy policy does not say whether chats train models. NSFW is off by default in the mobile app. Users in Australia, Brazil and the UK must pass a k-ID age check. On Trustpilot, it has 2.5 out of 5 from 35 reviews, with complaints about bans and support, a third-party figure.
Price. Free, or janitor+ at $12.99 a month or $99 a year, which is $8.25 a month. janitor+ gives five times more context and more models.
Who it suits. Character.AI users who want the same kind of community character chat, with adult content allowed.
2. NovelAI: the pick for private stories
NovelAI is a story editor, not a character chat site, but it suits Character.AI users who mostly write long stories.
What it does well. Stories, lorebooks and scripts are encrypted end to end, and prompts are not kept. The terms list no content-type bans. GLM-4.6 and Xialong run with 28,672 tokens of context, and every paid tier gives unlimited text generation. It has a text adventure mode.
Where it falls short. There is no free tier beyond a trial of 50 text generations, and no public character catalog. A lost password means lost stories. The terms require users to be 18 or older, but no check method is published.
Price. Tablet costs $10 a month, Scroll $15 and Opus $25.
Who it suits. Writers who want private, long-form stories.
3. SillyTavern: full control
SillyTavern is free, open-source software that runs on your computer and connects to the model you choose.
What it does well. It runs character cards with World Info lorebooks, group chats, personas, a scripting engine and extensions. It connects to OpenAI-compatible APIs, KoboldAI, Tabby, AI Horde and local backends. It does not track user data, and with a local model all text stays on your PC. It has no message limits of its own.
Where it falls short. You install it with Node.js and supply a model. Local models need a capable GPU. Content limits come from the backend, and the docs note that hosted models are often censored. There is no official support channel.
Price. Free. Model costs depend on the backend.
Who it suits. Technical users who want full privacy and control.
4. Chub AI: the fewest content limits
Chub AI says it does not meaningfully restrict characters or interactions, apart from illegal content and sexualized minors.
What it does well. It hosts public character cards and lorebooks. The subscription includes in-house models such as Soji 1.6T with 60K context, and it works with OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter and local models. Private chats are not used for training.
Where it falls short. The subscription is paid in crypto only, and the free option is a one-time set of trial credits unless you bring your own key or model. No age check method is published. Third-party sources report that it is blocked in Australia.
Price. $20 a month in crypto.
Who it suits. Users who want few rules and long context, and can pay in crypto.
5. AI Dungeon: text adventures
AI Dungeon is an interactive fiction tool with a Mature setting that does not limit sexual or violent output. A filter blocks sexual content involving minors.
What it does well. Free story models are listed as unlimited. Paid tiers raise context to 8k, 16k, 32k or 64K tokens. It has hundreds of community scenarios and Story Cards, and apps for iOS and Windows.
Where it falls short. Free context is only 2k to 4K tokens. The age check is a self-confirmation when you turn on the Mature setting. Encryption keys are held on the server, and third-party sources report that a training setting is on by default for new users.
Price. Journey costs $14.99 a month, up to Ultimate at $99.99.
Who it suits. Fans of text adventures who want long context on a paid tier.
6. SpicyChat: structured roleplay tools
SpicyChat is a character chat site with a free tier and strong roleplay tools.
What it does well. Tools include lorebooks, rulebooks with meters, group chat, director mode and personas. It publishes a model and context table. Paid tiers get unlimited messages.
Where it falls short. Context is 4,096 tokens on the free tier and 8K on True Supporter. Explicit bots must carry an NSFW label, and the rules ban non-consent, incest, step-family themes and real people. The privacy policy does not say whether chats train models. Users in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states must pass a third-party age check.
Price. Get A Taste costs $5.95 a month, True Supporter $19.95 and I’m All In $29.95.
Who it suits. Users who want structured tools and accept strict theme bans.
7. CrushOn.AI: a low entry price
CrushOn.AI has a low paid entry price and published credit limits.
What it does well. Free models do not use credits. Memory is 8K free, 16K on Standard to Luxe and 24K on the top tiers. Group chat is on paid tiers.
Where it falls short. The privacy policy says chat content is used to train models. Free chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. Free users get 100 credits a month. Third-party sources report a paid age check before the 18+ toggle in some regions.
Price. Standard costs $4.90 a month billed yearly. Tiers go up to $150 a month.
Who it suits. Budget users who accept training use of their chats.
How do these sites differ from Character.AI?
All seven allow adult content, which Character.AI does not. They differ on everything else.
- Content rules. Chub and NovelAI set the fewest limits, and SillyTavern sets none of its own. JanitorAI allows adult content on bots tagged Limitless. SpicyChat and CrushOn.AI ban more themes.
- Characters and tools. JanitorAI, SpicyChat and Chub have public character catalogs, the closest format to Character.AI. SillyTavern runs character cards you import. NovelAI and AI Dungeon are built around stories.
- Models and context. AI Dungeon lists up to 64k on top tiers, Chub 60K, SpicyChat 32K and NovelAI 28,672. JanitorAI’s free model has about 9k.

- Privacy and training. SillyTavern with a local model, NovelAI with end-to-end encryption and Chub with no training on private chats lead. CrushOn.AI says chats train its models.

- User reports. No site has strong public ratings. These figures are third-party.
Which one should you choose?
Choose JanitorAI if you liked Character.AI’s community characters and want adult roleplay. It works the same way, it is free with no published message cap, and janitor+ at $8.25 a month on yearly billing raises its context fivefold.
Choose NovelAI if you mainly write long stories and want them encrypted, from $10 a month. Choose SillyTavern if you want full privacy and can set up your own model. Choose Chub AI for the fewest content limits, AI Dungeon for text adventures, SpicyChat for structured roleplay tools, and CrushOn.AI for the lowest paid entry price.
If you prefer to stay on Character.AI, keep to its rules. Trying to get around its filters breaks the guidelines and can cost you your account.
Our pick
Free community character chat with no published message cap and a large catalog, held back by a small free context window.
Questions readers ask

No such setting is published. The guidelines say attempts to bypass safety systems are prohibited, and that breaking the rules can lead to content removal, warnings or account suspension.
What is the closest Character.AI alternative that allows NSFW?
JanitorAI. Like Character.AI, it is a free site with a large catalog of user-made characters. Unlike Character.AI, it allows sexual content on bots tagged Limitless, with bans on minors, gore, bestiality and sexual violence.
Which Character.AI alternative is free?
JanitorAI has a free tier with no published message cap. SillyTavern is free software, but you supply the model. AI Dungeon lists its free story models as unlimited, and SpicyChat has a free tier with 4,096 tokens of context.
How much does c.ai+ cost?
Character.AI does not show the c.ai+ price on its public pages; the subscription page asks you to sign in. Its terms say paid plans renew automatically and payments are not refundable except where the law requires.
