How we compared
We compared ComfyUI and Unstable Diffusion on the ten image dimensions from our full ranking of NSFW image generators. Weighed together, ComfyUI is the pick, as long as you have a capable GPU.
The dimensions are models and styles, character consistency, editing tools, content rules, cost per image, ownership and private mode, privacy and retention, age verification, setup and ease of use, and user reports. Output control and consistency weigh most, then real cost, then privacy and ownership. Ease of use counts, but it does not outweigh control.
The facts come from each service’s official home, pricing, terms, privacy and policy pages, the ComfyUI GitHub repository and the Unstable Diffusion changelog. User reports come from Trustpilot and topai.tools. The topai.tools figure is third-party. When a service does not publish a fact, we say so, and the gap counts against it. This article compares published facts. It does not report hands-on use. Our methodology page has the full method.
These two tools are different kinds of product. ComfyUI is open-source software that you run on your own computer, or on the paid Comfy Cloud. Unstable Diffusion is a hosted web generator at unstability.ai. That difference explains most of the results below.
What are the two tools?
ComfyUI is local software you control. Unstable Diffusion is a hosted service you rent by the month.
ComfyUI is an open-source, node-based workflow tool for image and video models. You build each job as a workflow in a node graph, and the same graph holds the model, the LoRAs and the edit steps. It runs locally on Windows, macOS and Linux, or in the browser as Comfy Cloud, and it also has an API. It is best for technical users who want full local control.
Unstable Diffusion runs a web generator with over 120 models and many community LoRAs. Pricing is a flat monthly plan with an unlimited pool for standard models. It is best for high-volume generation on many models.
The main trade is time and hardware against privacy and control. Each dimension below shows where that trade lands.
How do the two compare, dimension by dimension?
ComfyUI leads on models, consistency, editing, privacy, ownership and cost. Unstable Diffusion leads on setup, content rules and user reports.
Models and styles
ComfyUI wins, because it runs any open model you load. Unstable Diffusion has the larger hosted list.
ComfyUI supports open model families such as SD 1.5, SDXL, SD3.5, Flux, Qwen Image and Wan video. It also loads any local checkpoint or LoRA. On Comfy Cloud, imported LoRAs need the Creator plan.
Unstable Diffusion offers more than 120 models, including Flux, Seedream, GPT-Image, SDXL, Pony and Illustrious, and more than 40,000 LoRA influences. ComfyUI has no fixed list: what it runs depends on the models you download. Unstable Diffusion gives you a ready list with no downloads, so for range on day one it is the easier choice.
Character consistency
ComfyUI wins on control. Unstable Diffusion is simpler to use.
In ComfyUI, consistency is something you build in a workflow. You combine LoRAs, reference conditioning and image-edit models such as Flux Kontext. This gives the most reliable way to keep one character across a set, but there is no built-in character manager.
Unstable Diffusion supports reference images, up to 10 on Seedream 5.0 Pro, and stackable character LoRA influences. You pick them in the web app, with no workflow to build.
Editing tools
ComfyUI wins clearly.
ComfyUI has built-in inpaint, outpaint, masks, ControlNets, upscaling, model merging and image-edit models, and you can combine them in any order. Unstable Diffusion lists image-to-image and reference-guided edits on Seedream 5.0 Pro. Inpaint and upscale are not listed. If you often fix one part of an image, such as a hand or a face, ComfyUI saves regenerations.
Content rules
Unstable Diffusion wins, because its adult policy is written down.
The Unstable Diffusion acceptable use policy allows adult content with fictional characters. It bans sexual deepfakes of real people, CSAM including fictional CSAM, and bestiality.
The ComfyUI local app has no content rules of its own, because it runs on your machine. The Comfy Cloud terms ban CSAM, non-consensual intimate imagery and impersonation, but they do not address adult content in general. If you plan to use Comfy Cloud for adult work, that gap matters.
Cost per image
ComfyUI wins for local use. Unstable Diffusion is the simpler price.
Local ComfyUI costs only your own hardware. Comfy Cloud Standard is $20 a month, or $16 a month billed yearly. Cloud bills active GPU time in credits, per GPU second, and no per-image price is published. Cloud credits do not roll over. New users get 5 free cloud runs.
Unstable Diffusion Pro is $30 a month. There is no per-image price, but standard generations on everyday models are unlimited. Premium models use a weekly Heavy pool, and Max plans add more. There is no ongoing free tier, only a possible time-limited trial.
As a worked example from the published prices: a year of Unstable Diffusion Pro is $360. A year of Comfy Cloud Standard billed yearly is $192, or $240 if you pay $20 month by month, but how many images that buys depends on GPU time, which is not published per image. A year of local ComfyUI is $0 in fees if you already own a capable GPU.
Ownership and private mode
ComfyUI wins.
The Comfy Cloud terms say the user keeps rights to inputs, and local runs stay on your own machine. Unstable Diffusion does not state who owns outputs. It has public galleries, and the company may use generated images for marketing.
Privacy and retention
ComfyUI wins clearly.
The local ComfyUI core runs fully offline, so nothing leaves your machine. On Comfy Cloud, the terms say Comfy will not train models on input or output.
Unstable Diffusion keeps personal data indefinitely unless you ask for deletion. All images are visible for moderation review. For adult images, this is the largest difference between the two tools.
Age verification
Neither tool describes a verification method.
Unstable Diffusion requires users to be 18+ to turn off the filter or view explicit content, but no verification method is described. ComfyUI does not publish this: its terms state no minimum age or verification method. For how other services handle this, see our age verification brief.
Setup and ease of use
Unstable Diffusion wins.
Unstable Diffusion is a web app. You sign up, choose a model in the prompt box and generate, with no setup. One listed weakness is slower renders at peak demand.
ComfyUI uses a node-graph interface. The Desktop app makes the install easier, but workflows and model setup take learning. Local use also needs a capable GPU. The steep learning curve is ComfyUI’s main weakness.
User reports
Neither tool has much user data. Unstable Diffusion has more.
ComfyUI has a Trustpilot rating of 3.0 from 2 reviews, which is too few to mean much. Its GitHub repository has about 142,000 stars, which shows wide use among technical users. Unstable Diffusion has no Trustpilot profile. On topai.tools, 56% of 32 reviews recommend it, and that figure comes from a third-party source.
Where does Unstable Diffusion win?
Unstable Diffusion wins on convenience. It suits people who want results in a browser with no setup.
- No setup. A web app where you switch models from the prompt box.
- Ready model range. More than 120 models and more than 40,000 LoRA influences, with no downloads.
- Flat price. Unlimited standard generations on the $30 Pro plan, with no per-image math.
- Written adult policy. Adult content with fictional characters is allowed in writing, and the bans are clear.
Its weak points are the lack of an ongoing free tier, indefinite data retention, unstated output ownership and the possible marketing use of generated images.
Where does ComfyUI win?
ComfyUI wins on control, privacy and cost. It suits people with a capable GPU who are ready to learn a node editor.
- Control. Inpaint, outpaint, masks, ControlNets, upscaling and image-edit models in any combination.
- Consistency. LoRAs, reference conditioning and edit models such as Flux Kontext give the most reliable way to keep one character across a set.
- Privacy. Locally, nothing leaves your machine. On Cloud, Comfy says it will not train on input or output.
- Cost. Free and open source (GPL-3.0) for local use.
- Open models. Any checkpoint or LoRA you download, across SD 1.5, SDXL, SD3.5, Flux, Qwen Image and Wan video.
Its weak points are the steep learning curve, the GPU need, the lack of a built-in character manager and Cloud terms that do not address adult content in general.
Which one should you choose?
ComfyUI is our pick. It gives more control over models, editing and consistency, it keeps your images on your own machine, and it costs nothing locally. Choose it if you have a capable GPU and an evening to learn the node editor.
Choose Unstable Diffusion if you do not have a GPU, or if you want results in a browser tonight. It is the better tool for high-volume generation across many hosted models at a flat $30 a month. It also needs no hardware of your own and no time spent on workflows. Accept that it keeps personal data until you ask for deletion and that it does not state who owns your outputs.
If neither fits, the full image generator ranking covers five more tools. Promptchan has a free plan and a private mode, and NovelAI says it does not store generations.
Our pick
The most control, the widest model support and full privacy when run locally, at the cost of a learning curve and a capable GPU.
Questions readers ask
