How we compared
We compared six alternatives to SpicyChat on the seven dimensions of our text desk: models and context, characters and tools, content rules, message limits, privacy and training, age verification, and user reports. We also compared starting price, free tier and platforms. The table above shows every fact side by side, last checked on 25 October 2026.
Every fact comes from the services’ own pricing pages, terms, privacy policies and help articles. Review site figures come from third-party sources and are marked as such. Where a service does not publish a fact, we say “Not stated” or “not published”. We did not count anything a service only implies.
For this report we weighed the dimensions by the reasons people give for leaving SpicyChat. Context comes first, because SpicyChat’s free and $5.95 tiers stop at 4K tokens, and a short memory is what breaks a long roleplay. Price comes next, because SpicyChat raised its prices on 8 September 2026. Content rules and privacy follow, then platforms and user reports.
SpicyChat is in our full text desk comparison, where JanitorAI is the overall pick. This report starts from SpicyChat and asks which site to choose instead. For a direct head-to-head, read our JanitorAI vs SpicyChat report. Our full process is on the methodology page.
Why do people look for a SpicyChat alternative?
SpicyChat has strong roleplay tools: lorebooks, rulebooks with meters, group chat, director mode and personas. It also publishes a model and context table. Five limits push users to look elsewhere.
Short context on the low tiers. The free tier and the $5.95 Get A Taste tier cap context at 4,096 tokens. True Supporter at $19.95 a month raises it to 8K, and only I’m All In at $29.95 a month reaches 32K. A free JanitorAI user has about twice SpicyChat’s free context.
A price rise. SpicyChat’s prices rose on 8 September 2026, according to its own pricing update FAQ. The paid tiers now cost $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 a month. Paid tiers give unlimited messages and skip waiting lines, but the free message cap is not published.
Strict theme bans. Explicit bots must carry an NSFW label. The community guidelines ban minors, non-consent, incest, step-family themes and real people. Some of these themes are allowed in fiction at other services.
Privacy and platforms. The privacy policy keeps data only as long as necessary, but it does not say whether chats train models, and it does not mention encryption. There is an Android app but no App Store app on iOS.
Age checks and user reports. Users in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states must pass a video selfie or ID check by a third party. On Trustpilot, SpicyChat has 2.0 out of 5 from 62 reviews, with complaints about the paywall, queues and moderation. These figures are third-party.
Each alternative below fixes one or more of these limits. None fixes all of them at no cost.
JanitorAI: why is it our pick?
JanitorAI is our pick because it gives more for free than SpicyChat does, on the dimension that matters most: context.
What it does well. The free in-house JLLM model has about 8k to 9K tokens of context, roughly twice SpicyChat’s free 4K. The FAQ lists no message cap on the free tier. The catalog of user-made bots is large, with personas, tags and scripts. Bots with sexual content must carry the Limitless tag, much like SpicyChat’s NSFW label. You can connect your own API proxy, such as OpenRouter, to use other models. It has apps on web, iOS and Android, so it fills SpicyChat’s iOS gap.
Where it falls short. It has fewer structured tools than SpicyChat: there is no published match for rulebooks with meters or director mode. NSFW is off by default in the mobile app. The privacy policy does not say whether chats train models, which is no better than SpicyChat. It bans minors, gore, bestiality and sexual violence, and it does not allow explicit avatar images. On Trustpilot it has 2.5 out of 5 from 35 reviews, with complaints about bans and support (third-party).
Price. Free. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year, which is $8.25 a month, and gives five times more context and about three times faster replies when the site is busy.
Who it suits. SpicyChat users who chat for free or on the $5.95 tier and want more memory without paying more.
SillyTavern: the pick for privacy and control
SillyTavern is free, open-source software that runs on your own computer. It has the closest tool set to SpicyChat of any alternative here.
What it does well. It has World Info lorebooks, group chats, personas, Data Bank RAG, a scripting engine and extensions. It connects to OpenAI-compatible APIs, KoboldAI, Tabby, AI Horde and local backends. It has no message limits of its own. The docs say it does not track user data, and with a self-hosted model all text stays on your PC.
Where it falls short. You must install it with Node.js, and you must bring a model. Local models need a capable GPU. Its docs note that hosted models are often censored, so your content limits come from the backend you pick. There is no official support channel and no age verification, because it is software you run yourself.
Price. The software is free under the AGPL-3.0 license. Model costs depend on the backend, and local models cost nothing apart from hardware and power.
Who it suits. Users who left SpicyChat over privacy or theme bans, and who can do a one-time setup.
NovelAI: the pick for private long-form stories
NovelAI is built for writing rather than chat, and it has the strongest hosted privacy of the six.
What it does well. Stories, lorebooks and scripts are encrypted end to end with a key made from your password, and prompts are not kept. Its GLM-4.6 and Xialong models have 28,672 tokens of context on the site, nearly the size of SpicyChat’s top-tier 32K. Every paid tier gives unlimited text generation. The terms list no content-type bans and say user content is wholly the user’s own. It has lorebooks, modules, a text adventure mode and scripts.
Where it falls short. There is no free tier beyond a trial of 50 text generations. It has no public character catalog, so it does not replace SpicyChat’s bot library. If you lose your password, you lose your stories. It is web only. The terms require users to be 18 or older but publish no check. On Trustpilot it has one review, at 3.4 out of 5 (third-party).
Price. Tablet $10 a month, Scroll $15 and Opus $25.
Who it suits. Writers who want long, private stories more than a library of ready-made characters.
Chub AI: the longest context and few content limits
Chub AI hosts public character cards and runs its own large models.
What it does well. The subscription includes all in-house models, among them Soji 1.6T with 60K context. That is almost twice SpicyChat’s top-tier context, for $20 a month instead of $29.95. Chub says it does not meaningfully restrict characters or interactions, and it bans illegal content and sexualized minors. Private chats are not used for training. It has lorebooks with keyword triggers, chat trees and Stages add-ons, and you can bring your own OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter or local model for free.
Where it falls short. The subscription is paid in crypto only. The free option is a one-time grant of trial credits for a few dozen messages. Subscribers get unlimited messages for one user, but concurrent requests return an error. The terms require users to be 18 or older, with no published check. It is not available in Australia, according to a third-party report. Trustpilot shows 3.4 out of 5 from only 3 reviews (third-party).
Price. $20 a month, in crypto.
Who it suits. Users who want maximum context and fewer theme bans and are able to pay in crypto.
AI Dungeon: the pick for text adventures
AI Dungeon is a text adventure and story tool with a published context table.
What it does well. Its pricing page lists the free story models as unlimited. Paid tiers give 8k, 16k, 32k or 64K context, depending on tier, with DeepSeek and Ultra models. Its Mature setting does not limit sexual or violent output, and a filter blocks sexual content involving minors. Unpublished content is not moderated. It has hundreds of community scenarios, Story Cards, Plot Components and Do, Say and Story actions. It runs on web, iOS and Windows.
Where it falls short. Free models have only 2k to 4K context, less than SpicyChat’s free 4K at the low end. Age is a self-confirmation when you turn on the Mature setting. Stories are encrypted with keys held on the server, and a third-party report says the Improve the AI training setting is on by default for new users. On Steam, it is rated Mixed from 810 reviews (third-party).
Price. Journey $14.99 a month, Legend $29.99, Mythic $49.99 and Ultimate $99.99.
Who it suits. Users who want guided adventures and story tools more than character chat.
CrushOn.AI: the lowest yearly entry price
CrushOn.AI is a character chat site with a credit system and the lowest paid entry point of the six.
What it does well. Standard costs $4.90 a month billed yearly, or $58.88 a year. Free users get 100 message credits a month, and free models use no credits. Memory is 8K on the free tier, which is double SpicyChat’s free 4K, 16K on Standard to Luxe and 24K on Elite and Imperial. It has pinned memory, auto summary and group chat on paid tiers. Its tiers and limits are published.
Where it falls short. Its privacy policy says chat content is used to train models, in a general way not linked to users. Free chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. The credit system is complex, and unlimited Pro models need a separate $24.99-a-month package. It bans minors and aged-up characters, realistic images of people, bestiality and some fetish acts. A third-party report says some regions need a paid age check before the 18+ toggle. On Trustpilot it has 1.8 out of 5 from 22 reviews (third-party). It is web only.
Price. From $4.90 a month billed yearly. Tiers go up to Imperial at $150 a month.
Who it suits. Budget users who want more memory than SpicyChat’s low tiers and accept that chats train models.
How do the alternatives compare with SpicyChat?
Each alternative beats SpicyChat on at least one dimension. None matches all of its built-in roleplay tools on a hosted site.
- Models and context. SpicyChat gives 4K free, 8K at $19.95 and 32K at $29.95. JanitorAI gives about 9k free, CrushOn.AI 8K free, NovelAI 28,672 on paid tiers, Chub AI 60K at $20 and AI Dungeon up to 64k on higher tiers. SillyTavern depends on your model.
- Characters and tools. SpicyChat’s rulebooks with meters and director mode have no published match. SillyTavern is closest with lorebooks, group chats and scripting. JanitorAI and Chub AI have the largest card catalogs.
- Content rules. SpicyChat bans non-consent, incest, step-family themes and real people. Chub AI and NovelAI publish the fewest bans. JanitorAI and CrushOn.AI publish their own lists.
- Message limits. SpicyChat’s free cap is not published. JanitorAI lists no free cap, AI Dungeon lists free models as unlimited, NovelAI and Chub AI are unlimited on paid plans, and CrushOn.AI uses credits.
- Privacy and training. SpicyChat does not state training use. Chub AI excludes private chats, NovelAI encrypts end to end and SillyTavern can run locally. CrushOn.AI uses chats for training.
- Age verification. SpicyChat uses third-party checks in several countries and US states. JanitorAI uses k-ID in Australia, Brazil and the UK. CrushOn.AI has a paid age check in some regions (third-party report). The others rely on self-declaration or have no check.
- Platforms. SpicyChat is on web and Android. JanitorAI adds iOS, AI Dungeon runs on web, iOS and Windows, and SillyTavern runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.
Which one should you choose?
Choose JanitorAI if you want the closest free replacement. Its free model gives about twice SpicyChat’s free context, it lists no free message cap, and it runs on iOS as well as Android. janitor+ costs $99 a year if you want more.
Choose SillyTavern if privacy or theme bans drove you away and you can install software. Choose NovelAI for private long-form stories from $10 a month. Choose Chub AI for 60K context at $20 a month in crypto. Choose AI Dungeon for text adventures, and CrushOn.AI only if the lowest yearly price matters more to you than training use of your chats.
If you stay with SpicyChat, the jump that matters is to I’m All In at $29.95 a month, the only tier with 32K context. The $5.95 tier has the same 4K context as the free tier.
Our pick
Free community character chat with no published message cap and a large catalog, held back by a small free context window.
Questions readers ask
What is the best alternative to SpicyChat?
JanitorAI. It is free with no published message cap, its free model has about 9K tokens of context against SpicyChat's 4K, and it has apps on web, iOS and Android. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year if you want five times more context.
Is there a free SpicyChat alternative?
Yes. JanitorAI is free with no published message cap. SillyTavern is free, open-source software, and with a local model it costs nothing apart from your hardware. AI Dungeon also lists its free story models as unlimited, but their context is only 2k to 4k.
Which SpicyChat alternative has the longest context?
Chub AI, whose in-house Soji model has 60K context on its $20-a-month plan. AI Dungeon reaches 64k on its higher paid tiers, and NovelAI gives 28,672 tokens on its site models. SpicyChat's own maximum is 32K on its $29.95 I'm All In tier.
Which SpicyChat alternative is the most private?
SillyTavern with a local model, because no text leaves your computer. NovelAI encrypts stories end to end with a key made from your password. Chub AI says private chats are not used for training. CrushOn.AI is the weakest here: its policy says chats train its models.
Is there a SpicyChat alternative with fewer content bans?
Chub AI and NovelAI publish the fewest bans. Chub says it does not meaningfully restrict characters or interactions apart from illegal content and sexualized minors, and NovelAI's terms list no content-type bans. SillyTavern sets no rules of its own; the limits come from the model you connect.
